To reinstall GRUB on the MBR, one must click on "Rescue system" (instead of "repair installed system"). Wait to boot then follow these steps: 1. to logon use username "root" (no password will be asked) 2. type "grub" and wait for the grub shell to start 3. mount the partition: "root (hd0,0)" then find where your grub installation is "find /boot/grub/stage1" 4. To install Grub on the hard drive's MBR (not on the partition it-self), type "setup" followed by the hard drive number found at the previous step. For example, if the find command returned "(hd0,1)", I'll type "setup (hd0)". To install on the partition (not recommended), I should type "setup (hd0,1)". 5. Reboot Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot on OpenSuSE 11.1 installation DVD 2. Select "Repair installed system" in the menu 3. Once booted, click on "Custom Repair" 4. Uncheck everything but "Boot loader" 5. Click "Next" on the bottom right 6. (Optional) Click "Other" on the bottom right and select "reread configuration from disk" 7. Click "Other" (again) and select "Reinstall grub on MBR" 8. Click "Finish" on the bottom right 9. Reboot and realize that Grub is still not installed Actual Results: After performing the previous steps, you will most probably boot on Windows (tm) if installed on your system.
