Hm, I'm seeing tons of information, but don't know exactly how to continue.
AFAICS:
- There's a patch in xorg #10625, that seems *very* reasonable, to be applied
- We don't issue any PreferredMode options, and I would like to keep it that
way
- RandR's opinion of modes selected for outputs doesn't fit user's expectation
Question is - what is the user's expectation?
If one monitor is set next to the other (non-cloning mode), both monitors
should IMHO be driven by their preferred resolution.
But in clone mode, the current code pretty much makes sense, selecting the same
resolution on both, as a best-of-both-worlds solution. If one resolution is
larger than the other, panels would typically only be visible on one of the
monitors, and that is a no-go.
If we agree on that, I can come up with a patch for upstream RandR. This will
be some kind of heuristic, as you cannot reliably detect multimonitor setups
(RandR is too flexible in that case, so these are just corner cases with a wide
band of potential configs).
