I am confused about what is going on on your system.
According to all my experiences in the past
"Error during device I/O" is a lower-level USB problem.
Either a bug in the lower level USB software (libusb/kernel)
or a hardware problem: Often the software runs at USB 2.0 speed
but the hardware is a bit weak and doesn't work reliably with
USB 2.0 speed. In this case connect the USB device directly with
a good and short USB 2.0 cable to the computer and/or unload
the USB 2.0 kernel module to enforce slower USB 1.x speed, see
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners_from_SUSE_LINUX_9.2#USB_Cabl...
I still wonder why there was no segfault in sort_and_average
before your update but after the update it happened.
How can this happen when the code of the avision driver
did not change?
And now there are "Error during device I/O" issues
which are (according to my understanding) also unrelated
to the code of the avision driver.
Could you re-install the original kernel from our CDs/DVD
and try again so verify whether or not it is kernel-related?
