Hi there - thanks for the info; I must admit I'm -horribly- confused :-)
It -sounds- like your machine was installed KDE default, and that you're
running GNOME on top of that (somehow).
Having said that it -looks- like the User environment should work fine: is that
the case ? it seems to have the right variable set, DESKTOP_SESSION is set etc.
that should present no problem (I hope).
The 'root' environment looks altogether more problematic: "su -" works for me
on SLED10 since $WINDOWMANAGER is preserved - it's unclear to me why it is not
in SL10.3 ... Unfortunately, since the root environment is also almost entirely
devoid as to other hints relating to what desktop we're running under - this
looks hopeless.
How did this change ? - also, my bash in SL10.3 is acting strangely - no emacs
keybindings (Alt-f, Alt-b etc.) - has there been a lot of tweakage there that
may have broken things ? and who would know ? :-)
