Apologies, some of my mail was unknowingly going to another box and I only
discovered that after a 2 day trip away and found only a few emails when this
box was powered up after a HD rebuild - I didn't know thunderbird was running
on the other box.

After the problem was reported, the next upgrade fixed the problem, then later
upgrades (Factory) caused it to break again, however, after doing another
zypper dup today and rebooting, it's OK again, so I shall mark it fixed.
