And I have seen this bug much before I reported Bug No. 232790. If all the bug reports on Kaffeine are seen, you will see more crash report on this application than any other. You throw 10 VCDs by different producers, it will crash on most of them. It cannot play what xine plays. In my more than 6 years of suse usage, it has been all the time crashy, buggy. My question is, why is this your default media player? SMPlayer is listed as Audio player, but on most media, it peforms better than kaffeine. Even KMplayer is better. Then look at amarok. When an audio cd is inserted, device notifier lists amarok as the first choice to play it. You select the option, amarok opens, but does nothing. It may be able to play audio cd, but with deeper exploration. Should playing an audio cd be such an execise? Why is there no KSCD? Amarok may have it's strengths, but it's UI is awful. It does not 'just work' even at simple things. Then I have vlc and mplayer installed not by my choice, but part of some one click install I believe. The above VCD which crashes kaffeine, I played with Mplayer. No it cannot play it, nothing happens. But the same VCD is played by SMPlayer with default configuration. Obviously, MPlayer for Opensuse is compiled with some non-optimal settings. Now, the pity is, the above VCD, cannot be played even by vlc media player. It just does nothing, or so it appears. (The VCD is playable in SMPlayer, but instead of planned VCD watching, I am writing this bug-report) For the last 6 or so years, I have been a user of Opensuse. My experience is, whenever I bring a new media, half the media players fail one way or the other and one of several of them plays it. The list of players on my system are, default kaffeine, default amarok, SMPlayers,KMplayer, vlc, xine, flash player. All of them profess to play all the media, but none of them is capable of playing half of a bunch of 10 media you bring from Market. Often I end up cutting a sorry face before my children , frantically flipping through program after program to play a CD / DVD / VCD. I do not have the other ubiquitous OS in my home. Now my children of 7 and 5 have started saying, "give me the CD, I will play it in neighbor's home". They just cannot understand why their Dad's computer struggles with what neighbour's PC does effortlessly. What image they are going to carry of Opensuse and Linux? It is not just my children, but even my guests who were witness to my sorry face. In comparison, though media player in Windows is not half as versatile as any of the above,it handles media from the Market without much fuss. Windows users have one or two programs, but they handle everything. On my system, one media crashes kaffeine and is played excellently by xine! fails in Mplayer, but plays in SMPlayer! The versatile vlc fails, but KMplayer plays it. If one fails this time, another fails another time.I can never guess, when I bring a new media, which program to try it with. It is really sorry affair. Even in their UI, one is good in one aspect, bad in another aspect. Please mind that all the codec have been installed in all the cases following the guidelines in (open)Suse website. Default configuration is kept. Opensuse team needs to apply it's mindand select better defaults than Kaffeine and Amarok. Then compile programs like MPlayer with better default settings. I beileve there are some library mismatches. My experiences do not seem to be shared by users of Ubuntu. But, I can vouch fedora is equally frustrating.
