She was using OpenSuse 10.3 before and Kubuntu even before that (long long ago ;) ). Anyway, she never had any sound problems. Now with the new System if all volume sliders are at maximum, the volume is still like normal talking at best, when using an external amplifier and barely audible when using the build in speakers. I followed your guidelines for choosing the right codec, but wasn't able to find it in the alsa list. On a sidenode, yast apparently got confused about her intel modem (snd_intel_i8x0m) and created two soundcards. alsaconf correctly removed the modem and configured only the soundcard. I then blacklisted snd_intel_i8x0m to avoid any further confusion and rerun yast as well as alsaconf without any luck.
