11.1 Gave me the same problems.
One way to (maybe) resolve it. Reboot to runlevel 1. Delete /etc/asound.state.
'init 3', then log in as root. In char mode, run aplay -vv
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav.
If that sound play worked, then run `alsactl -f <somefile> store`. Now `init
5`. Once logged in, open a konsole window and run `alsactl -f <somefile>
restore`.
With luck, that will do it. For me (and others) the kmix settings in KDE were
fscked, and needed "reset" by the alsactl restore.
Good luck!
Also, don't forget to try http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting
