also, vanilla kernel has crashed 3 times since i last posted.
i will try rolling back other packages as i have time and update if i find
anything useful.
this takes forever because it crashes rarely. at the same time, because it
crashes, i'm not using the computer much. so it's a vicious circle of
inaction.
