So - basically the straces don't look -that- interesting (sadly) ;-)
What I would recommend instead is manual stack trace polling ;-)
can you install the gnome-main-menu-debuginfo package, and when it starts to
chew CPU attach with gdb, and do this:
while (looks slow) {
ctrl-c
thread apply all backtrace # (t a a bt)
continue
# human sleep random time ..
}
that should give us ~10 traces that will most likely show where the slowness is
piling up.
Almost certainly it's a semantic leak of something that some slow algorithm is
walking, that is never intended to grow big, but does somehow.
