Unfortunately for the resolution of this issue, I uninstalled openvpn (and all
other non-vpnc vpn software) after I reported this issue, and I've had no
problems other than the first incident.
I've tried reinstalling both versions of openvpn several times along with the
NetworkManager packages today, but I haven't had the problem consistently
occur. Once in a while, I get a single error after an install, but it clears
up after retrying.
zypper ps never shows any output, even if I am connected through vpnc when I do
the upgrade or downgrade.
These were representative of the errors I found in the NetworkManager log on
the day of the event:
Nov 6 09:16:10 linux-uewf nm-dispatcher.action: Script
'/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/netcontrol_services' exited with error status
127.
Nov 6 09:16:10 linux-uewf nm-dispatcher.action: Script
'/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/autofs' exited with error status 1.
But these two errors appear regularly in my logs without impairing
funcitonality.
Your theory that maybe it was restarting NetworkManager rather than openvpn
specifically seems reasonable to me.
Since it doesn't appear that anyone else is having this issue and it does not
appear to be reproducible even for me, it's probably not worth spending any
further time on, until someone else encounters it.
