Really, I had to realize that this problem doesn't occur when using little
files. But then I logged in to our Cisco Catalys 6509's FWSM module, and dumped
the whole configuration with "show running-config" (I did this in konsole, of
course). I selected this enormous (about 200kBytes) configuration by scrolling
the mouse (it took a long time ;), and the copied the selection to the
clipboard. I pasted the clipboard to the vi editor, and the resulting text file
was space tabbed (verified by midnight commander). I truncated the space
trailing by sed -r s/[[:space:]]//, and redirected the output to another file.
That file was not space tabbed. But then, when I logged out from console
(because it freezed), started it again, dumped the new (not space tabbed) file
with cat, selected the result again, copied it to clipboard, and the content of
the clipboard was space tabbed again. I verified it by mc again. I tried it wih
both vi (in konsole) and kwrite, ot editors received the trailing space from
the clipboard.
I detected this problem first time, when I wanted to compare two huge Cisco
firewall configurations with diff, and every line was reported to be different,
while they were identical for my eyes.
