Hi Johannes,
the reason for this is simple to explain: because this scanner does not promote
itself as "scanner" but as "processor". This happens for an entire set of
scanners from HP and from Epson.
Therefore the "scanner" entry is disfunctional. To cicumvent the problem I
generated a workaround that works like a charm in close cooperation with Julien
Blanche from the sane-devel team. The solution readily found it's way into the
current cvs of sane-backends, more specifically sane-desc.c.
My recommendation: take a look into the patches I attached. Build sane-backends
from the latest release (15) I provided and look into the file 70-scanner.fdi
and 55-libsane.rule generated by this version. That will explain everything and
will ensure that scsi and usb scanners are treated in the very same way and all
scanners that promote themselves as processors will easily go into
sane-backends because the corresponding entries will go into the
device-description files that come with sane-backends.
I readily provided the corresponding entries for four scanners - those I know -
and three out of them have been tested successfully.
I am sure that the patches will provide the answers you'd like to see - rather
than the lshal output - I'll provide the information you'd like to see anyway.
Dieter
