https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=336678 Summary: yast online update is practically useless due to 64bit packages Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: PowerPC OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: pczanik@genesi-usa.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Online Update for PPC 32bit (like Pegasos and EFIKA) is seriously broken. It tries to install almost a hundred 64bit packages, including many devel packages, even if no devel packages were installed on the machine at all. One of the problems might be, that some 64bit packages are installed even on a 32bit base install. But 64bit packages are getting installed by YOU, even if they were removed previously by hand. If somebody does not realize, that 64bit updates are installed, YOU can fail in the middle of upgrade due to non working pre/post install scripts, resulting in a half upgraded system... It makes extremely difficult to maintain a 32bit system. The solution would be an online update, which kicks off 64bit packages from a 32bit PPC machine, and only installs 32bit packages afterwards. Right now I use these workarounds to maintain 32bit PPC machines, but as you can see, this is not for the the average openSUSE user: - using the command line as root, remove any 64bit packages: rpm -qa | grep 64bit | xargs rpm -e --nodeps --noscripts - start yast2 and choose 'online update' (or enter you at the command line) - from the drop down list on the upper left corner of the window choose 'installation summary' - at the bottom of window deactivate 'automatic check' - uncheck any package names ending in '64bit' in the right panel - use 'check now' at the bottom of the window and check 'ignore here' at each question, and click OK at the end - start the update -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
