Noticed interesting "feature".
When nsswitch.conf is (incorrectly) configured to:
passwd: compat
group: compat
shadow: compat
passwd_compat: files ldap
group_compat: files ldap
shadow_compat: files ldap
The console logins work, but all other authentication/lookups (Xdm, id, finger)
fails.
Changing the _compat: entries back to "ldap" only reverts to broken console
logins, but working authentication.
This may be a red herring (I haven't RTFM'd on the syntax of the _compat
option), but nevertheless seems bizzare.
I also notices some applications (PBS Pro for example) end up with broken pipes
on getpeername calls to ldap.
Changing:
services: ldap files
to
services: files
worked around the problem.
