Sorry, I was not clear in my first comment. I did try the intellegacy driver
and it works worse than the intel driver.
intellegacy: x server really crashs; no screen; no reaction to keyboard or
mouse; restart of the x server does not works; only shutdown via ssh helps
intel: strange colors; a reboot is needed to get a working xserver back but no
data loss
If you need any information please ask; till now the updated system (see
comment #4) is running fine. The only drawback is that video overlay is not
working. As this is my desktop system and I use it to view dvb-t is is not the
best solution but better than a real crash as result of using the intellegacy
driver. Perhaps there are some options for the driver section of the
configuration files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* to test?
