But you can test the EDD implementation of kexec on your machine. Just copy
over the contents of /sys/firmware/edd to some temporary location, call from a
VT (not X11 as this may break VGA console):
# kexec -l /boot/vmlinuz-$(uname -r) --initrd=/boot/initrd-$(uname -r) \
--append="$(cat /proc/cmdline)"
# echo r > /proc/sysrq-trigger # emergency sync
# echo r > /proc/sysrq-trigger # readonly mount
# kexec -e
and in the new kernel, compare the contents of /sys/firmware/edd with the saved
one. If that works on your machine, then the bug is fixed. (Without my patch,
the directory is simply not existent. You can also 'dmesg|grep EDD' and see a
message like 'BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 6 devices found'.)
