OK, as long as the wrong dpi problem was still there, I didn’t look
closely. But now I checked and the font sizes you see are normal for
your display.
The default font size is 10 pt (1 pt = 1 point = 1/72 inch).
As your monitor has 120 dpi, your default font size in pixels is:
10/72 inch * 120 dots/inch = 16.67 dots
The default font on your system seems to be "DejaVu Sans". This font
looks exactly like in your screen shots if displayed with
pixelsize=16.67 (full hinting, anti-aliasing on, subpixel hinting off,
autohinting off (i.e. byte code interpreter used)). You can check this
with
xfd -fa "DejaVu Sans:pixelsize=16.67"
when you compare the glyphs in your screenshot with those displayed by
this xfd command line with "xmag", you can see that they are
identical.
This size is just above the limit where the byte code hinted “DejaVu
Sans” font switches to a stem width of 2 pixels, which appears
suddenly quite bold. You can see that if you compare it with the
slightly smaller size of 16.4 pixels:
xfd -fa "DejaVu Sans:pixelsize=16.4"
displays glyphs with much thinner lines (1 pixel instead of 2)
although the size is only a tiny bit smaller.
