You got exactly the right idea, however you'd have to build the kernels
yourself. Nobody has built them "just in case".
Basically, you'd have to install the development tools to build kernels:
sudo zypper source-install --build-deps-only kernel-default
And then find and adapt one or more starting points to kernel bisection, such
as:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection
Basically you'd git clone the kernel repo, then let git bisect checkout a
version between v3.16 and v3.11, then in the kernel source directory you'd do
something like:
zcat /boot/config.3.11.WHATEVER-default > .config
make olddefconfig
make -j2
And then go on to install it and add it to the boot menu.
At this point, I think it's easier if I try to reproduce this in January. If
manually writing values to /sys/class/backlight/... is a workaround for you,
let's do that until January :)
