--- Comment #2 from James PEARSON 2011-08-20 13:23:48 CEST ---
I investigated the "Cool'n'Quiet technology" options offered by the MSI
890FXA-GD70 motherboard BIOS.
BTW BIOS Version: V1.10
Release Date: 06/30/2011
The "Cool'n'Quiet technology" options are
DISABLED => shutdown command does not work
ENABLED => shutdown command works OK
AUTO => shutdown command works OK
The related logs messages
# /var/log/messages during initial FRESH Install using 11v4 i586 DVD
# Cool'n'Quiet technology is set ENABLED in the BIOS
# shutdown -h now command works OK

My conclusion: the latest BIOS of by MB is still not optimized for running AMD
Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor on linux kernels.
Need install v12.1 to see if this is still an issue
