--- Comment #64 from Josua Dietze 2008-07-07 03:26:34 MDT ---
Note: all distros were updated with the latest 'patches'.
Fedora 9:
---------
The microcode service was installed and run by default.
# modprobe -v microcode
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.25.9-76.fc9.i686/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/microcode.ko
# microcode_ctl -u
microcode_ctl: writing microcode (length: 392192)
microcode_ctl: microcode successfuly written to /dev/cpu/microcode
/lib/firmware/microcode.dat: 1182084 Bytes
"/* Tue Apr 1 14:14:15 CST 2008 */"
Ubuntu 8.04:
The microcode service was NOT installed by default. I did it afterwards.
# modprobe -v microcode
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/microcode.ko
# microcode_ctl -u
microcode_ctl: writing microcode (length: 387072)
microcode_ctl: microcode successfuly written to /dev/cpu/microcode
/usr/share/misc/intel-microcode.dat: 1167038 Bytes
"/* Thu Jan 31 13:30:44 CST 2008 */"
openSUSE 11:
The microcode service was installed and run by default.
# modprobe -v microcode
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.25.5-1.1-pae/kernel/drivers/base/firmware_class.ko
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.25.5-1.1-pae/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/microcode.ko
# microcode_ctl -u
(back to the BIOS)
/etc/microcode.dat: 1206776 Bytes
"/* Tue Apr 1 14:14:15 CST 2008 */"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A "diff -w <fedora microcode> <opensuse microcode>" showed no difference, so
the differing size is whitespace-induced. The other notable difference is the
"firmware_class" module that openSUSE loads.
