https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216872 Summary: download.suse.com is slow and broken, not a good default Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 plus Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de QAContact: qa@suse.de It seems that you are offering download.suse.com by default as optional extra source during installation by now. I'm not sure whether this is a good idea: - Other than download.opensuse.org, it just doesn't work for me. I tried using it during the Alpha phase and ran again and again into the problem that download.suse.com redirects to different mirrors for every single file. This causes checksum errors if the mirrors it redirects to are out of sync and renders the installation source basically unusable. Just now, I tested it again and on the first attempt it already redirected me to download.uni-hd.de which is dead since ages. Remember that checksum errors and unavailable packages and metadata files are known to crash YaST and make it lose data: bug 215445, bug 214886, bug 212048. - It is damn slow. I observed it during the testing phase where it was never fast, not a single time. So it's not a problem of getting redirected to a slow mirror from time to time, it's always slow. I tried to reproduce this and succeeded on the first attempt. After multiple tries, inst-source-extra from download.suse.com was finally accepted without checksum errors, and now I'm currently downloading acroread with modem speed. Severity is "Critical" because adding this has a severe impact on the perceived performance and usability of the software management stack and is IMHO worse than not offering inst-source-extra by default at all. Please fix download.suse.com or use something else that works better. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
