Please do not refer to cdrkit, it is also a non-redistributable package as it
is
in conflict with both Copyright law and GPL requirements. I hope we will
discuss the state of cdrkit later.....
A Reed Solomon encoder was also never "included" in cdrkit as cdrkit is just a
_very_ old version of cdrtools from September 2004 (that already included the
Reed Solomon encoder library). The creators of cdrkit however added lots of
bugs to what they call "their fork". Because of these bugs and because the
code taken from cdrtools is extremely outdated, there are few users that are
happy with cdrkit.
A Reed Solomon encoder is rightfully included in cdrtools since 2001, but
cdrtools did always correctly honor the license requirements when doing so...
There currently are three different implementations:
- the first implementation written by Heiko Eißfeldt in 1999 was never put
under
GPL. It was used rightfully by correctly honoring the license state by
cdrtools in former times. This implementation has been illegally in use by
cdrdao and cvdimager. cdrdao rewrote the code and now claims that it is
using an "own" implementation even though this implementation shows fewer
changes when compared to the original implementation then the second
implementation mentioned below. vcdimager still uses the old implementation
(with different indentation) and definitely is illegal. cdrdao is in a
doubtful state....
- the second implementation was written by Heiko and me and was put under GPL.
It is faster than the first implementation and it is if course also
faster then the rewritten code from cdrdao. This implementation also has
been in use by former versions of cdrtools.
- the third implementation was also written by Heiko and me and was put under
CDDL. This is the fastest implementation and this is an implementation that
fixed some bugs compared to the previous implementations. This version also
added code (like a Reed Solomon _decoder_) and this is the only maintained
version and used by cdrtools since 5 years.
The difference between the three versions is several man months of hard work
each and they all use different algorithms, so they are of course different
works.
