You are right, forget Nouveau. I can not reproduce a kernel > 2.6.32.* which
doesn't hang. Maybe I selected the wrong kernel in grub when trying to test
2.6.25.3 without Nouveau.
Good news! Quick testing of 2.6.35.3:
- clocksource=jiffies _completely_ did the trick!!!
- clocksource=nolapic_timer did not, although the hangs were less frequent.
Specifically, with clocksource=jiffies:
- I immediately got the feeling of a responsive desktop.
- audio/video playback was smooth.
- rt-benchmark, known for being able to hang kernels in an instant, was unable
to hang the kernel. No matter how short intervals I used, how long I let it
run, and how many instances I ran at once. The kernel did not hang even once!
- While testing the above, which lasted a few minutes, a running instance of
rt-benchmark with the highest real-time priority with FIFO-policy and its pages
locked in RAM, was no longer obstructed by lower priority tasks. Its
scedulability was rock solid, as demanded.
- On the downside, rt-benchmark was no longer schedulable if intervals were
shorter than about 0.001 seconds.
