OK, I tried this on the openSUSE 10.3 system.
/var/log/messages after modprobe microcode microcode_ctl -u
So, I'd say, with that old microcode file, “updating” (because there's nothing to update because the file doesn't contain microcode for your CPU) works.

That error message has nothing to do with the action microcode_ctl performs. That's the in-kernel firmware interface for which microcode files are not available. That's something for the future to replace the microcode_ctl userspace program at all.
