The change I expected to be most likely to have an effect is the sub-pixel type. Did you try changing that, and restarting KDE afterward?
- Change .xinitrc, remove the line 'xrandr --dpi 90.6 : Yes, the underscores now do show. And they still show when I re-add that line. Go figure!
Most people sensitive to fonts find a DPI that is a multiple of 4 (or better 12, or still better 24) works best. That rules out 90 (and 90.6) as favorable to best font rendering.
