The problem happens when in the BIOS IDE settings is switched to "Enhanced". Boot does work when IDE settings is set to "Compatible". The problem is that Vista BSODs in mode "Compatible", so to switch between Linux and Windows one has to fiddle with the BIOS settings now all the time.
