I just run into this problem with fresh "net" install. I asked the openSUSE
forum in a thread that someone with similar symptoms started. But I was able to
sort it out myself (without knowing of this bug) and to isolate "microcode.ctl"
as the cause.
I don't get any kernel messages or oopses and nothing in the logs - just
freezes or spontaneous reboots.
As it happens I'm working on a machine that I set up to test a prog I coded; so
I have Debian Etch, Ubuntu 8.04, Fedora 9 beside openSUSE 11. All default
kernels, but none of these others show the error; in fact, I managed to boot
into openSUSE only by using the Ubuntu kernel.
No reiserfs on that system; it's a Pentium M in a desktop mobo though. The
other report in the forum was a Celeron M.
If you need my hwinfo or any other test report tell me.
Oh, and a manual
# modprobe -v microcode
installs fine, but a
# microcode_ctl -u
gives an immediate reset (back to the BIOS) ...
