Richard, as you can see from Comment 2, I have already noted that disabling PulseAudio prevents this, however, as noted in Comment 3, Flash then starts having severe sound problems - if a flash video is left open for a certain amount of time, the audio no longer plays back properly. Instead, you get a part-second loop that jumps forward every 5 to 10 seconds. This does not happen with PulseAudio enabled, but as you have noted, one CPU core runs at full throttle constantly.
I did note all you mention, but I don't actually disable anything. I think that setting the variable merely tells kmix to ignore pulse audio. FWIW I have watched a BBC TV programme (which uses Flash) from end-to-end with no problem using the technique I describd.
