Here are the log messages relevant to my usb keyboard.
The following was logged when the keyboard didn't work:
boot.omsg:<6>usb 3-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
boot.omsg:<3>usb 3-1: device descriptor read/all, error -71
This is logged when it works:
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
boot.msg:<3>usb 3-1: device not accepting address 2, error -71
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=413c, idProduct=2005
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: Product: DELL USB Keyboard
boot.msg:<6>usb 3-1: Manufacturer: DELL
