The intent is that stable distributions can provide free support for new hardware by updating hal-info, without having to risk destabilizing hal itself. I notice that openSUSE still packages the device info in the hal package. This should be split into hal and hal-info (I know Ubuntu, at least, does this), so that they can have different update policies. This, at least, is the advice given at the HAL website http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal : "hal-info is a small hal sub-package that provides the hardware data and quirks. These quirks are currently things like what mice support reporting battery status, what music players are supported and what cameras are detected. hal-info and hal should not be packaged together. When packaging hal, it should depend on hal-info, of any version. hal-info should also be checked out in the same level directory as hal if you intend to use ./run-hald.sh" I'm not familiar with any existing policies regarding these sorts of updates, and have been unable to get more information about it, so if this has already been covered in the past, I apologize for the noise.
