I ran memtest86 over night for 16 hours (12 passes) without any indication of
memory problems.
It doesn't appear to be a hard disk problem either, because the problem occurs
also when directly streaming mpeg movies from the network via the mplayer
plug-in in firefox (many drop outs). The protocol for streaming YouTube movies
(in firefox) seems to be protected much better: only occasionally very little
visible drop outs.
Loading the same files from CD/DVD to disk seems to work without problems as
well, no problems with playing the same movies from CD/DVD, USB memory stick or
hard disk.
As I said previously I already replaced the mainboard by a new one of the same
type and newer BIOS.
Another observation: Occasionally the network data quality is very bad, i.e.
jpeg images embedded in normal HTML pages are visibly corrupted. However, a
re-boot usually cures this problem.
I still have the suspicion that the NVIDIA nForce 520 chipset is not properly
supported by openSUSE 10.3 (and maybe neither by openSUSE 11.0, because the
boot problem with the 64 bit version as reported in bug 358347 seems to remain
in 11.0).
According to http://de.opensuse.org/HKL/Mainboard the higher version of my
mainboard, i.e. MSI K9N Neo-F V3 with the NVIDIA nForce 560 chipset, works fine
with openSUSE 10.3 (the mentioned hangup problem should be resolved by
specifying "hwprobe=-isa" as for my board). What do you think about investing
some money to try the V3 version of the MB?
Of course, I could also try first to reproduce the problem with another
distribution, e.g. the latest Knoppix.
