https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=861712 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=861712#c0 Summary: No indication that VPN fails and why (NetworkManager, GNOME) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: gp@suse.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de CC: fcrozat@suse.com Found By: Product Management Blocker: --- VPN, controlled via the GNOME 3 interface to NetworkManager has been working fine for me. At one point I changed my password for corporate Intranet and VPN. And next time I tried to use VPN (days later) the connection would just fail to establish, silently. No indication of any problem whatsever, let alone what the problem might be in the GUI. Even the logs in /var/log/NetworkManager are rather not helpful: 2014-02-01T15:23:03.721087+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> Starting VPN service 'vpnc'... 2014-02-01T15:23:03.826088+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN service 'vpnc' started (org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc), PID 21335 2014-02-01T15:23:03.892032+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN service 'vpnc' appeared; activating connections 2014-02-01T15:23:03.892392+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN plugin state changed: init (1) 2014-02-01T15:23:03.920353+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN plugin state changed: starting (3) 2014-02-01T15:23:03.933357+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN connection 'VPN' (Connect) reply received. 2014-02-01T15:23:04.228317+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <warn> /sys/devices/virtual/net/tun0: couldn't determine device driver; ignoring... 2014-02-01T15:23:05.699784+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <warn> VPN plugin failed: 1 2014-02-01T15:23:05.700253+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN plugin state changed: stopped (6) 2014-02-01T15:23:05.700531+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN plugin state change reason: 0 2014-02-01T15:23:05.700781+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> Policy set 'zyxel' (wlp3s0) as default for IPv4 routing and DNS. 2014-02-01T15:23:05.701511+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <warn> error disconnecting VPN: Could not process the request because no VPN connection was active. 2014-02-01T15:23:10.988419+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN service 'vpnc' disappeared In comparison, once I realized what was going on, the log of a successful connection: 2014-02-01T15:40:53.932766+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> Starting VPN service 'vpnc'... 2014-02-01T15:40:53.934295+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN service 'vpnc' started (org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc), PID 21809 2014-02-01T15:40:53.941408+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN service 'vpnc' appeared; activating connections 2014-02-01T15:40:53.983413+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN plugin state changed: starting (3) 2014-02-01T15:40:54.089857+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN connection 'VPN' (Connect) reply received. 2014-02-01T15:40:54.090272+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <warn> /sys/devices/virtual/net/tun0: couldn't determine device driver; ignoring... 2014-02-01T15:40:54.379786+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN connection 'VPN' (IP4 Config Get) reply received from old-style plugin. 2014-02-01T15:40:54.380270+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> VPN Gateway: 195.135.221.24 2014-02-01T15:40:54.380631+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> Tunnel Device: tun0 2014-02-01T15:40:54.380929+01:00 tuna NetworkManager[4233]: <info> IPv4 configuration: At a minimum, I'd expect to see a message box saying something like "VPN Connection $V failed.
