--- Comment #94 from Gábor Nyers 2012-08-10 13:02:56 UTC ---
Today I've hit this bug again (as I regularly do on a once a week basis) and
while looking around for more information, I've stumbled upon this very
informative post:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2009-April/msg02452.html
Bottom line: The message is a symptom of something else going wrong.
Given the variety of affected systems, there are probably multiple factors
coming together. In my case, I've never had this problem while not using
LibreOffice.
Another interesting bit:
While trying to remotely debug Xorg it suddenly came back from the "dead".
After issuing `bt` in gdb, there was a lot of text, the screen flickered and a
few seconds later Xorg has woken up. In fact I'm writing this very message in
the same, previously frozen Xorg session. Up until now I needed to hard-reset
my laptop to solve the problem. Every time.

This bug has been around for ages, there are bug reports from as early as 2009!
Despite that a *lot* of distro's hitting the problem, nobody with the requisite
knowledge seems to be willing to invest a little time in this. At the very
least, build some recovery measures in the code; kill the Xorg session if you
have to, anything better than to be needing to hard-reset the system. This
incident with gdb shows that, at least in some cases, something can be done
about the freeze.
I wonder when the Xorg devs (and also the Xorg maintainers at the countless
distributions) get their act together and start working on a workaround and a
fix.
