I'm using a Dell D830 with an external 1680x1050 display connected via DVI. The dell has an intel 965GM controller. After installation the system rebooted and tried to drive the monitor in a resolution it could not display. I used <ctrl><alt><F1> then <alt><f7> and the screen became visable. It looked like I was seeing a 1024x768 window into the top left of the X screen.
