At the moment the issue can not be reproduced anymore.
The following was tested:
The issue could be reproduced, either by using the nvidia drivers or Xorg
drivers.
The issue did not occur when booting into run level S.
Today I tried to reproduce the issue by booting into run level S and write a
lot of data to disk using dd if=/dev/urandom of=testfile bs=4096 count=100000
The issue did not occur.
Then using telinit 2 I swicthed to runlevel 2. Since the network was now
available I installed dbench using yast and tested using dbench 100. No issue.
I switched to runlevel 3, same test, no issue.
Switched to runlevel 5 (Xorg nvidia drivers). And the issue did not occur to my
surprise.
A did repeated warm and cold boots into runlevel 5 with both the Nvidia and
Xorg drivers... no more freezes...
Was this an issue where the kernel tried to write to a specific disk location?
I don't know. I did fsck the file system on multiple occasions, but the issue
kept appearing...
Perhaps you know of an other thing to try?
