A further observation:
Placing the cursor in the "lock now" corner and leaving it there causes the
screen saver to trigger (and, as mentioned, disengage immediately, producing a
very brief flash on the screen) every 5 seconds. In this state, the 10-minute
DPMS timeout does _not_ expire and the monitor is never put into low-power
mode. If the cursor is kept out of the lock-now corner, then the DPMS timeout
_does_ take place.
