I had this problem on 10.3, on a new install on a blank hard drive. Letting
the installer determine the partition setup would always result in the swap
partition being the first partition on the hard drive, resulting in the no OS
installed message. By changing the partition scheme to move / to the first
partition and swap to the 3rd partition normal boot was achieved. The hwinfo
provided also shows swap being sda1, boot sda3 / sda2. Don't know if this
helps, but it looks like some sort of sanity check on a new install should
prohibit swap from being first.
