I have noticed that file system indexing programs (updatedb, beagle) cause this
behavior, and have put it down to kernel memory fragmentation caused by the
caching of directory and inode entries (which the kernel is then "reluctant" to
free up). (I have not seen these programs mentioned in this bug, but felt
obliged to put my 2 cents in -- just in case those programs (or other similar
ones) are being used.) In any case, the fact that reading all directories on a
large file system and statting every entry will force almost every other
program out to swap is a bug in my opinion which should be addressed (if not in
this bug report, in another).
