This is probably related to Bug 404975. If it is, it's ultimately due to bad
interaction between X.org and SCIM via XIM protocol, and is linked to this bug:

Here is the symptom. SCIM somtimes swallows all keystrokes away from the
focused application when the keyboard's input context changes i.e. when the
location where the cursor is blinking, waiting for key input changes. This
happens randomly which means no clear steps to reproduce. It also depends on
factors such as current locale, CPU load, and also the timing of the input
context switch.
Bernd, can you see if the problem still happens when the SCIM is not running,
by existing SCIM from the system tray? Note that SCIM is still running in the
background even when the input bar is not displayed, as long as the icon is
showing in the system tray.
