Perhaps I mis-spoke when I said that at 1st boot it loaded the radeon driver.
That was an assumption on my part. It very well could have been the
radeonrandr12 driver. Any way, the DVD install picked a driver that worked @
1st boot. In fact, I saved that xorg.conf; I'll add that section when I boot
the laptop.
"And how does the config with 'sax2 -r -m 0=radeon' look like?"
What do I mean by a garbled display? The display is divided 2/3rds on the top
and 1/3 on the bottom. The 1/3 on the bottom is just a bunch of lines and
frames. The top 2/3rds has a 3/4 inch garbled vertical line in the middle with
a small display fully featured on the left and a similar but garbled display on
the right. I can only move the mouse in the lower right quadrant and cannot
get it to any other part of the display (like the top left). i.e., the same as
with the LiveCD.
What I did not add above is that when I finished playing with the drivers you
listed, I entered "aticonfig --initial" and it fetched the xorg.conf previously
written and I was back in Display Driver 8.40.4 with no problems.
I'm thinking that the problem resides in the Radeon driver and my system as all
the rest of them seem to work.
