- It is not a problem with the drive: I was able to format it with NTFS on XP
on another machine (including reading from/writing on it).
- It is not a problem of the machine: I can mount other USB hard drives on the
same USB port, i.e., drives that are already formatted (and of course I can
read/write on them).
After formatting with NTFS I still could not mount it, but at least it tried to
format the drive with ext3. It went to 95%, then stopped again with an error
message saying that it could not access sector 0.
After again formatting with NTFS under XP, I used the very same machine which
has Fedora Core 6 installed, too (kernel 2.6.19). Same access problems. So it
seems it is really the kernel that has problems with this drive.
