Unfortunately, I've had rpm corruption issues on more than one host correlated
exactly with using them as an obs worker. In fact, *complaints* (by rpm) but
not *evidence* of corruption (on the host) show up almost immediately. It can
be seen in the build logs themselves. Eventually this appears to cause "real"
(versus reported) rpm DB corruption.
I grabbed the sources for 4.8.0 and 4.9.0 and also straced rpm2cpio on two
different systems, one using 4.8.0 and one using 4.9.1 (openSUSE 12.2). 4.8.0
definitely does open up Packages and Names (in addition to the environment
files) and 4.9.X does not.
From a certain perspective, it doesn't really matter what the exact mechanism
is: it's not working properly (corruption reported during build).
Looking at rpm2cpio.sh (available on RedHat-derived machines) it looks fairly
trivial.
