OK, thanks for the info.
Your issue is _not_ a Firefox update but an update which modified your
/etc/nsswitch.conf
The entry
hosts: files mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns
is to blame but I'm not sure how you got it.
The nss-mdns packages in the GNOME:STABLE repo seem to be contraproductive
since the buildservice has no ideas of -32bit packages and therefore your
system can't work without manual interaction if you update from GNOME:STABLE.
Opening a bug is still useful since the people behind GNOME:STABLE are probably
interested in fixing that somehow.
So please open a new bugreport against openSUSE 10.2 and make clear that it's
caused most probably by the GNOME:STABLE repo and reference this bug as
information.
