I have been looking into this issue for the R4000-series laptops made by Compaq
(Now supported by HP). We have a working patch for the R4000 and R4100. I
believe the issue you have described fits the description of the kernel
keyboard input bug described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/385477
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273477
Basically what happens is that pressing a volume button once on the
R4000-series laptop causes the button repeat event to get repeated forever -
due to the fact that the input driver never detects a button release. This is
actually because the hardware was built to assume that there is no
"auto-repeat" in the software (i.e. each scancode means that the volume button
is still down) - and was built this way because the multimedia button input
standard was not mutually agreed on by companies yet at the time.
This then causes issues for user because the button "repeat" is endlessly sent
from the kernel to the evdev driver (or whatever other keyboard driver is used)
- causing things like X to show that the volume is endlessly being lowered, and
future keyboard input events get clogged/unresponsive. Mouse input then
becomes unresponsive to some degree (i.e. clicks stop working), possibly due to
the way and order that the input driver generates events.
I will be reopening this bug in attempt to gather information before submitting
a patch to the mainline kernel, as we are trying to figure out how "far" up the
R4000-series this keyboard bug goes. I can confirm a successful fix for the
R4000/R4100 on mainline kernels.
Anybody still experiencing this issue on the R4200 is HIGHLY encouraged to
comment here, as we'll be needing some debugging information from them in order
to properly patch this issue for all quirky keyboards in the Compaq/HP
R4000-series.
