I also wonder why the kernel version in the images went from 4.3.x to 4.6.x and back to 4.3.x although zypper dup on running systems installed kernel-default-4.7.3-1.1.armv6hl.
Simple: If you choose to run an unofficial Contrib image that does not use our Tumbleweed kernel, you will have to live with the pain of fixing your /boot/zImage, /boot/init and /boot/dtb symlinks whenever Tumbleweed installs new official kernel-default or dtb-bcm2835 packages. There's a reason official images exist that do not have that problem. When using upstream based kernels you can even use a GRUB boot menu to switch between kernels, only the /boot/dtb symlink is relevant then. I've been meaning to update the image to GRUB, but with http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=989284 it seems a bad time to drop the separate /boot partition...
