Kernel 2.6 update HOWTO
Hi all, We have a workstation amd64 with updated kernel 2.4.x of SUSE 9.0. We would like to update to kernel 2.6 (rpm in ftp.suse.{de,com}). What's is the safe way to do that by keeping the current updated kernel 2.4 ? Thank you, Q. NGUYEN-DAI

The safest thing is to use a different partition. You need separate directories for all the files in /etc/* and /lib/modules/*. I'm sure the experts here will know alternatives. Patience, persistence, truth, Dr. mike

That's not true. It works just fine on the same partition and the same /etc -Andi

But I thought he wants to keep the 2.4 stuff intact, and if you change the /etc/sysconfig/* for the changes in 2.6.x you lose that. That's what happened to me anyway, but I really am no expert. Just know enough to be very dangerous :-) My 2.4 kernel won't boot any more, but I don't care. Patience, persistence, truth, Dr. mike
