Opteron vs Celeron-D EMT64

Dear Digiterati We've spent several months modifying our legacy Solaris code (apps and drivers) to work on Opteron motherboards using SuSE10. Now the project manager said: Take a look at these other Intel motherboards using the Celeron-D (341) (because they're cheaper) http://indigo.intel.com/Syndication/DistributeModule.aspx?a=55&m=154&l=1&pp… Googling around I read claims and counterclaims stating that neither AMD or Intel has "true 64-bit", whatever that means. Can anyone point me to an unbiased site that would explain the differences clearly? TIA & cheers --

sound problem on suse 10.0

Hi, I have a problem with sound on SUSE 10.0. After boot sounds work fine. But in a while, for no particular reason, sound becomes choppy, distortion has periodic pattern. Attempts to restart alsa ("rcalsasound restart") or/and loading-unloading sound (snd, emu10k1, etc) have no effect. The only way to get sound working normally is to reboot computer. I would appreciate any advise and/or link to "howto" fix this problem. I have Audigy 2 ZS sound card. The onboard Nvidia souncard is not configured (Tyan K8WE board). Suspend to disk or ram

I am using an hp pavillion zv5000 with an AMD Athlon 64. I have the SuSE 64 10.0 installed on this laptop. I have not been able to get it to suspend to ram or disk. I have read three papers published in the open suse web site and tried the suggestions there. I have edited the boot options to add the S3 parameters. I have added shutdown in the sleep file. I have tried all the suggestions found in those papers. The results have not changed at all. When I try to suspend to ram or disk a small window on the desktop opens and returns "preparing to suspend". It goes through the process and X11 goes down. This leaves me at a black screen with this appearing in the upper left corner. "Stopping tasks: _" . The system hangs there. It has done this since installed. None of the changes I have made have had any effect on this outcome. I really would like suspend to work on my laptop. Can anyone give me a clue? David

How-To interpret the Stack Trace information with Tcl/Tk

As you all have figured out I'm very new to Tcl/Tlk. I was assigned the hard task to fix a couple of bugs in a Tcl/Tk GUI implemented by someone else. The existent GUI allows for left-button clicking on a color-coded particles flux representation. The numeric value of the flux is correctly displayed on a Point info widget. But for values greater than 10^9 (1e9) an error message pops up on the screen which reads: "Error in Tcl Script Error: integer value too large to represent. OK Skip Messages Stack Trace" If I click on the Stack Trace button I get the following info that I cannot quite understand: integer value too large to represent while executing "expr $num-int($num)" (procedure "format_vis" line 29) invoked from within "format_vis $hst_id """ (procedure "show_info_frame" line 106) invoked from within "show_info_frame 304 335" (command bound to event) In fact the package I'm testing includes a module named "mf.tcl" which is a sequential collection of procs. There is indeed the following boud proc: bind $base.canvas_field <Button-1> {show_info_frame %x %y} proc show_info_frame { h v } { **** Question: **** Is the 106 indicated in the Stack Trace an offset inside the proc show_info_frame ? The proc show_info_frame is at line 1558 of the "mf.tcl" file. If I add ( 1558 + 106) = 1664 which is a line inside the proc show_info_frame but such a proc is NOT recursive. I mean it doesn't call itself. Infact at line 1664 there is the following statement: if { $plot(info_frame) == "" } { There is indeed an "info_frame" but it's not a call to proc show_info_frame. I would appreciate if someone could help me interpret the information provided in the Stack Trace with the hope that helps me find and fix the bug. Thank you in advance for your help, Maura

Tcl/Tk library file bug FIXED !

White smoke ... I succeeded in creating the Monte Carlo executable that links the CERN library and the Tcl/Tk .a and .h files. I just got rid of a macro that is proprietary for Sun Unix but it's deleterius on Linux/Suse. The culprit is " -Df2cFortran". This option was in the list of the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS. I realized it was junk when I launched "make -p". This is a left-over from the installation procedure for Sun. It's just amazing that "make" did not complain about it ! Thank you all for assisting me through this nightmare. Maura

Crash plugging USB serial ports

What is the meaning of the option -X32 ?

I tried to get some info for the Tcl/Tk library file that is not linked because it is regarded by the linker as "incompatible". . mauede@linux:/home/mokhov/restricted/mars15/linux/lib> file -k libm15gui_linux.a libm15gui_linux.a: current ar archive\012- archive file\012- Assembler source Then I enquired about "ar". I remember Dr.Mockov typing "ar" during our Monte Carlo code installation attempt. In fact I had never seen such a command before and asked him about it. He said it archives files. I just typed in "man ar" and read the following: mauede@linux:~/cernlib.32-2005-ifh.de/2005/lib> man ar NAME ar - create, modify, and extract from archives ...................................................................... ...................................................................... ar ignores an initial option spelt -X32_64, for compatibility with AIX. The behaviour produced by this option is the default for GNU ar. ardoes not support any of the other -X options; in particular, it does not support -X32 which is the default for AIX ar. What is the meaning and consequence of not supporting the option "-X32" ? I do not know what this option does (never seen before) and am caught by phobia at reading he magic number "32" .... I wonder if there is any relation with this unsupported option and the linker regarding the file "libm15gui_linux.a" as incompatible with the rest of the objects being generated by compiling with the option -m32 .... Installing 32bit apps

I need some clarifications, until now, whe just worked with 32 bit servers running SLES9 and SL9.2, now we got and EMT64 server and installed SLES9SP3 for x86_64. There are some packages that we need but are available only in 32 bit versions. Can i just install an rpm built for SLES9(i586) on a SLES9(x86_64) installation? Thanks in advanced. Ciro

SuSe and issues with their kernel's.

I have copied this to both lists due to my disgust with SuSe's kernel modifications from the vanilla kernel and additional modules not compiling right off of them. Anyone compiling a vanilla kernel under SuSe 10? First here is my hardware configuration: Appro XtremeServer with 4 - 880 CPU's, 64GB Ram, 2 - 36GB 15k SCSI drives This server uses the NVidia nForce4 Pro 2200/2050 chipset I untar my kernel. Enter the directory, do a "zcat /proc/config.gz > .config" Then I do a "make menuconfig". Look through the settings not changing anything. Do my make, make modules_install, make install. Everthing looks good. Do a reboot, it starts the boot, gets to my 79xx SCSI driver, sees the first few drives, then starts dumping kernel error messages and finally freezes up. I am using a software RAID1 of 2 drives. But that should not matter. I have also downloaded the OpenSuse 10.1RC1 kernel which is 2.6.16-20 installed that. Everything booted fine. So I copied it's .config into the vanilla kernel directory, did my make routine, reboot and same issue. Why do I need a vanilla kernel you ask? Well because there are a lot of applications that do not seem to compile when pointed to the SuSe kernel source tree. One being RedHat GFS which we are going to start using. There are other applications as well. And I am a bit upset that they change their kernel so much that some of these applications will not compile on their kernel. Or if anyone is using GFS on SuSe let me know what you did. Any help appreciated. Brad Dameron SeaTab Software www.seatab.com
