[opensuse-factory] Plans and Issues for ATI fglrx Driver for 11.2?

Listmates, There are 2 issues that need to be addressed regarding the fglrx driver and the upcoming 11.2 release. Currently in 11.1, there are many laptop cards supposedly "supported" by the ATI driver that crash or hardlock when the driver is installed. Currently my X1200 is one, the 200 is another from the list (I'm not sure what the technical card architecture is for the "200"). Suffice it to say, this is a significant problem for all affected users. The issues that need to be addressed pre-11.2 are: (1) Performance issues and crashes caused by the ATI driver. Recent driver problems: The 9-2 driver release caused my Toshiba 205d laptop to reboot on xdm start and the 9-3 driver caused my laptop to hardlock if glxgears was started. All fglrx drivers 8-10 through 8-12 had performance of less than 60% of the 8-9 driver. Compounding the problem is the fact that nothing prior to the 8-12 driver will even compile or run on 11.1 or later (presuming 11.2 as well) Thankfully, there are some cards that seem to do OK with the recent 9-3 driver on 11.1, but it is hit or miss ...and... the fact that it works on "some" does nothing to address and help the users where it "does not" work. Before the 11.2 release, Novell needs to get a handle on what cards will and will not run with the ATI driver and at least incorporate a warning or release note for those with affected hardware. (2) Confirm - ATI driver support will be dropped for all R300-R500 ATI cards post 9-3 driver release (per phoronix.com ATI forum). This is another *biggie* Novell needs to get its arms around, to again, either incorporate into the installer a way to not install the driver on non-supported hardware or identify and warn about the lack of support for all R300-R500 cards. That means no (nada) fglrx driver support for the R300-R500 series cards which include the: 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800, X300, X550, X600, X700, X800, X850 AllInWonder, and X1050 cards affecting all laptops bought before Q3 2005 (or January 2007 in the case of the X1050). All of which are still *very* prevalent in the group of laptops that make up the installed user base today and will continue to do so through 11.2 release. This issue of dropping support is separate and apart from issue (1) above because the group of cards in (1) are supposedly still supported. Other Thoughts: After Stefan Dirsch handed over the reins of driver maintainer to Bob Walmsley <bob(a)walmsley.com.au> I guess he is now the guy that this should be coordinated through. I am glad to try and help, and to run test cases, etc. since I drew the black bean in laptop selection so let me know if/when there are new cases to test. I follow the ATI driver releases and test each one so I have a good handle on where things stand today. The problem is that Novell needs to use its resources to get a working partner in ATI to address some of these issues. Luugi Marsan <atilinuxnovellbugs(a)ati.com> was in the past the ATI contact, but at present, I haven't a clue who the ATI contact is or even if there is one. Without a good contact, we are dead-in-the-water getting any of these issues addressed and we are guaranteed a significant number of stranded users if these issues are not addressed. Right now the 8-9 driver works fine for 10.3 and 11.0, but unfortunately it is incompatible with 11.1. The ATI issues prevent me, and all others affected, from being able to move to 11.1. Hopefully, if Novell will start now to address some of these driver issues with ATI, then by 11.2 release they have a good chance of ironed out. With a desktop, you can always rip the ATI card out and replace it. With a laptop ... you are kind-of stuck. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse-factory] gcc miscompilation on Factory i586?

Hi, I've got a real weird issue by trying to update mozilla-nss for Factory what I can only interpret as compiler issue or very weird coding issue. mozilla-nss is running a comprehensive test suite during build which currently only seems to fail on openSUSE_Factory i586. It apparently works on x86_64, all older distributions and also in Factory_staging. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=mozilla-nss&project=mozilla… In the failing buildlog one can see that it's crashing on a tool called signtool with free() on an invalid pointer. (search for "- FAILED"). Devs, Posted to user list but Per and I are still scratching our heads. (well, I don't know if he's scratching, but I am...) Why does opensuse use separate directories under /etc/apache2 for ssl.crl ssl.crt ssl.csr ssl.key ssl.prm? Why is that any better than say putting all the certs in /etc/apache2/sslcerts? After all, the dirs are just option in /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/vhost-ssl.conf, example: SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache2/ssl.crt/server.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/apache2/ssl.key/server.key so why have 5 directories if 1 will do? -- David C. [opensuse-factory] hplip problems

Bug #487060 (Critical) refers - one in-house Novell user has seen the problem where jobs are queued but won't print on a network printer . The printer, in my case a USB attached HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-one does the same with the factory hplip and hplip-hpijs at ver. 2.8.7. The problem started with a zypper dup just before the M1 release and affects all the boxes I have. I tried 2.8.7 on 3 boxes and attaching the printer I get the same problem. So I downloaded hplip-3.9.4 source and installed it after using zypper to remove hplip and hplip-hpijs. The scanner function works perfectly. The print comes out as a page of solid black and the job remains on the queue. Propbably a mismatch between cups and the new hplip. I've suggested a new 3.9.4 package be added to factory - no further response so far. Sounds like my standard complaint? You're right. Is anyone having printing problems with HP printers? [opensuse-factory] Automatic bug reporting tool

Hi all. I just want to ask, why isn´t Apport (http://en.opensuse.org/Apport), or any automatic bug reporting tool, enabled by default? I think, it would by useful for you (as developers) to have it enabled, at least in development versions. Or wouldn´t? Reports via this tool could be more accurate, than obtaining info from users in some cases. I have over the years compiled from soutce about everything out there. However, recently I have noticed the /usr/include/asm and /usr/include/linux are the source of headaches. In the early days they were links to the /usr/src/linux kernel source. However in an effort to setup more CPU types there has been a change. /usr/include/asm seems to lack headers that are in /usr/include/asm-x86. I heard at some point that the real clean headers were in /usr/include/asm and linux. My question is based on this x86 machine would it be better to link asm to asm-x86? And what is the file /usr/include/linuxls" (no .h) doing there. [opensuse-factory] Last zypper dup

Guess what? zypper dup forgot to update everything correctly. First off it decided to install kde3 and leave off the toolbar and start button. It did supply the gray line at the bottom. However, there is no menus, and pager. There is the normal desktop Icons. It also defaults X to kde3 now. I have noticed that the toolbar must function because thing I have started end up there and are not seen. kdebase3-3.5.10-22.7 kdebase4-4.2.2-79.25 This is a openSuSE 11.2 system. [opensuse-factory] New Qt 4.5 problems

Hi, a few days ago, the Qt versions on KDE:/Qt45/openSUSE_11.1/ suddenly changed from a simple 4.5.x to something like "4.5.0+4.5.1.20090424-1.1". Since then, I see a couple of issues here: 1. Kickoff menu only draws a frame with transparent contents 2. run command (Alt+F2) does the same, i.e. draws an empty frame 3. Taskbar thumbnails have a completely transparent background, even though the actual thumbnail paints correctly Switching off compositing does not help. Does anybody else experience the same? Hey openSuSE factory; I have version 11.2 and KDE. The problem is why does SuSE make all sound devices fail to work for users? I have tried kradio with root and it works as a user it fails. Skype, amarok and kdetv all fail as a user. I did get amarok using Yast2 rpms to work with amarok-xine and yauap (which fails to hold the volume correctly on startup). I have even set permissions to 666 on /dev/dsp and for Skype a entry in /etc/services. Kradio complains about no dev/radio as a user. Kdetv fails for root and a user. And Yast2 did setup the TV Card and radio. Hi, It has been my goal to support the LiveCD ISO also on a USB and let it make the changes you do in ~linux store persistently on the USB stick (so you can e.g. try easily the same thing on different computers). Now I got my first bug report claiming this is not wanted and should only be done if explicitly asked for. Now it's me against the user and I can of course easily close WONTFIX, but I wonder what others thing: what is the use case of storing the live cd on a USB stick? Give me some background: The ISO is a .iso meant to be written on a optical disc (CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD-RW). There the file system will be purely readonly and all changes end up in memory. But as newer syslinux can boot ISOs also from hard drives, there is a new option: put the .iso file raw on a usb stick - overwriting the partition table, losing all data. So you would have 700MB on a 4G stick, there is the question why you would want to store things in memory if you have plenty of room on the stick. And then there is a 3rd option: copy the _content_ of the .iso into an existant vfat file system and create a vfat mbr (using syslinux). There the changes would end up as additional file in the vfat and may take up some room that you might want for other things. In both cases the changes to the ISO will be an additional file (named copy- on-write - .cow) that is easy to erase if you want to start from scratch. The bug in question is #498311. Same problem on factory with 2.1.4 and 2.2.0 on 11.2 Alpha0. Running VirtualBox as root on any box, it gets stuck at "futex(0x69bbcc, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 1, NULL" as seen with "strace -s 256 -f VirtualBox". If I "ssh -X" in as root from another box, VirtualBox works fine, but locally as root on either box, doesn't work - works fine as user. Bug #487060 submitted 2009-03-19 19:20 MDT, but no response so far. I have seen the same problem with qjackctl which also runs OK as user. Some stuff just won't run as root because of the FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE problem. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... I just installed the 11.2 Milestone 1 DVD on my test system, an ancient Compaq Presario 2110US with 512 MB of RAM and a 1.6 GHz Athlon XP. First impressions: 1. The Synaptics Touchpad wasn't active on the DVD boot. I had to plug in a USB mouse or use ALT-<letter> commands to navigate the install menu. 2. After that, the install was fine. The only other comment I have, and this is common to earlier openSUSE installs as well, is that I haven't been able to set the host name during the install. It's not terribly obvious how to set it *after* the install, either. Have I missed something obvious, or does openSUSE not have a place to set the host name during an install? 3. The system, like 11.1, comes up with Beagle installed and running. This kills my 512 MB machine and I end up de-installing it as soon as I can. It can be disabled on a DVD or network install, but as far as I can tell it can't be disabled on an install from a LiveCD. Any chance of making the Beagle install optional in all cases? Other than that, everything looks good. I may put another hard drive in my workstation and dual-boot it with 11.2 just so I can hack on the stuff I really want to hack on -- cloud / virtualization. :) -- M. Hi, You may have noticed or may be not, but I've experimented a bit with the factory live cds. While the 11.1 livecds used some combination of squashfs+aufs, the factory live cds use some new, experimental file system with the working title "doenerfs", which embeds an ext3 image. As this uses lzma compression, the size went from ~680MB to ~570MB for a GNOME live cd@ i586. Now I had several requests in the past to add additional software that I had to refuse because there just wasn't enough room on the CD (and I need to extra MB as buffer because with compression the size required can jump quite considerable from build to build). So I ask: what do you think I should add. Open requests are basically everything installed by the DVD and is not from the CD. This includes e.g.: - gimp - java runtime - beagle - the complete printing locally stack (e.g. drivers, filters) - 4 more text editors - 3 more shells And there is the request to include more languages on the livecd. This is actually my preferred solution - as I see the live cd use case (smaller download) more visible in countries that speak languages other languages than german and english. If you look at http://en.opensuse.org/Statistics, this would mean: russian, italian, spanish, spanish, polish, french (as it fits). Of course a third option is: leaving the live cd at 570MB for smaller download (and/or more free space on a USB stick). Hallo. It would be nice to have a central place for multimedia libraries and codecs. Nowadays they are spread over many home:*:Factory projects. GStreamer primary development project is even GNOME:Factory and it is frozen in GNOME:STABLE:*, even if it has nothing to do with GNOME release cycle. It means that it's hard to upgrade multimedia stuff like GStreamer on released products and even test new libraries. That is why I would like to propose new repository: multimedia:libs This repository should contain latest version of multimedia libraries and codecs. It should be preferred Factory devel project for this type of packages. It is not intended for multimedia applications. It should be built for released products, so other projects can easily resource it if appropriate. I volunteer to start with my packages and GStreamer. May require submitting a bug. Building a RPM package from a tarball will quite often include stuff that's already installed, e.g:- I have to give checkinstall options such as --exclude /lib64/,/usr/bin/gcc,/usr/lib64/gcc/,/lib64/crti.o,/lib64/crtn.o and others when I discover with "rpm -qpl xxxx.rpm" that they are included in the package. Has anyone else noticed this as it has been so for a very long time. Noting that every problem I have posted to this list in recent months has been met with silence, suggesting that most people install the distro and simply run with it as is - see if my luck changes this time. Packages such as jack are still at 0.109 while the latest 0.116.2 is needed for certain apps like dttsp to work correctly. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... But this one was dropped because of several serious bugs and poor support upstream so no easy solution for this package. But this package was for a long time maintained in separate repository in BuildService and there was some changes in old package meantime. So there is a problem how to merge changelogs. Currently the easiest way seems to be to commit all changes in development branch as one changelog entry to the old changelog and replace old package with a new one. But this may occur more frequently with cooperation in BuildsSrvice so maybe it would be good idea to have some formal rules how to solve such situation. We also discussed results from discussion on mailing list about changelogs. Result from this discussion was that what we should write in changelogs is only packaging changes and leave a note where to find detail information about changes during package update. That's encouraging... It seems that ATI commitment to its Linux driver program is superficial at best. That's is the real bottom line here. It's a "take what you get" mentality. All of it's great lip service about wanting "Linux Driver Feedback" and "being interest" in resolving driver issues, is not worth the silicon its written on. You have worked far more of these issues than I have, and we have worked issues together through bugzilla at lease since late 2007, but I have never in my life seen the absolute ignoring of Linux user driver problems than I have in the past 6-8 months. As mentioned, I have filed ATI feedback cases on every single release since 8-10, provided all logs, confs, hardware specks, and it is very apparent that ATI hasn't lifted a finger to even try and identify the issue. Hallo. Maybe you remember that we tried to upgrade libusb0 to libusb1 + libusb-compat in beta phase of openSUSE 11.1. We got a lot of bug reports. That forced us to switch back to libusb0. But it was a very valuable feedback for upstream. Upstream tried to debug and fix all these issues and libusb1 reached version 1.0.0 and it became a new stable branch in December. That is why I want to try the full switch to libusb1 again. I had a problem with kaffeine x86_64 crashing when I changed stations. I built and installed xine-lib-1.1.16.2 which cured the crash, but audio outputs a few syllables then goes silent - happens on start up and on station change. I tried rebuilding kaffeine from kaffeine-0.8.7-1.142.src.rpm to see if would help, but it complains because /opt/kde3/bin/dcopildcpp is not installed. Which package delivers the above file? Hello all I downloaded and used openSUSE-Factory-NET-i586-Build0052-Media.iso to install Factory on 2 machines. Things went a lot better than openSUSE-Factory-NET-i586-Build0050-Media.iso - good work! ####################### # Net installation ####################### First remark, the Net install went quickly - great d/l speeds! Second remark, during the installation in the "Running Internet Connection Test" window, I encountered the following (small) error: Error Download failed: File '/content key' not found on medium 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss/' History - Resource not found ####################### # Initial startup ####################### # machine 1 On the Gigabyte.GA-EP45-DS5 / CPU Q9550 / 4 Go RAM - the installation finished fine and basic first startup went well. Everything seems fine. As a side note, I guess I need to get used to kde4 (I say that because I had a conflit in yast when I tried to add a "kde3 basic" package... probably my fault...I was looking for a kde 3 pattern to add to add kde3 as well during the net install but couldn't fine anything - hint, hint - so I just added a 'kde 3 base' selection and tried that but in the end I ended up removing it due to conflicts... :( My didn't sound card - a "Xonar Essence STX" didn't error out in Yast as in previous versions of opensuse but the son icon doesn't "show up" in the kde4 task manager tool .... Still some progress has been made. Hi, I wanted to release a first milestone before easter, but unfortunately I found 2 blocking issues while pretesting the DVDs and the live cds have a very poor performance at the moment, so I withdraw this idea. Next chance to release a milestone is the week after easter week - e.g. april 23rd. It would be cool if more people could test factory installation and live cds and file bug reports, so the first milestone is good enough. [opensuse-factory] Latest Update of KDE 4.22 Factory for 11.1 Renders KDE 4.2 Unbootable

The KDE4 desktop was updated normally using Yast and KDE4 factory repositories. In the past, this has not caused any problems. This time however KDE4 does not start. KDM fails to show the login in screen. GDM boots up and displays the login screen, allowing access to KDE3 and Gnome but not KDE4. Using XDM as the login manager, an error message complains: "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 139. Check your installation." Searching on the internet did not point to a solution. The file contain the program (kdebase4-workspace-4.2.2-219.1.i586.rpm) was downloaded from the 11.1 Factory respository and installed but to no avail. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? If it is the same then workflow is missing branch for labeling of external hard disks without mounting the drive. Dear All, I guess that maybe some of you already noticed it, but some previous successfully build packages are suddenly failing for the openSUSE:Factory repository only. This seems to be caused by the new version of Patch that is in the currently being build Factory. Unfortunately the patchfiles that are failing need to be recreated after the new version of patch is installed. Fortunately there are no backwards compatibility issues. Hello, I have provided for testing HPLIP version 3.9.2 (packages hplip-3.9.2 and hplip-hpijs-3.9.2) for openSUSE 10.3, openSUSE 11.0, openSUSE 11.1 and for the openSUSE development version "FACTORY" for 32-bit Intel compatible (i586) and 64-bit AMD (x86_64) via the openSUSE build service at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/rwooninck:/updates/ The packages are * only for testing * without any guarantee or warranty * without any support As an extreme example, this means that if your complete computer center crashes because of these packages, it is only your problem. On the other hand this does not mean that those packages are known to be terrible broken but they are not thoroughly tested so that any unexpected issue can happen. For example I did some quick tests with a HP PhotoSmart C5180 all-in-one device on a 32-bit workstation with openSUSE 11.2Factory and printing worked normally. Do not use FACTORY if your system is 10.3, 11.0 or 11.1. Use the matching package for your particular system. FACTORY is not better, it is worse when you have openSUSE 10.3, 11.0 or 11.1. Using whatever packages from FACTORY in a openSUSE 10.3, 11.0 or 11.1 system causes crashes in arbitrary cases because you would also need the base system from FACTORY. You can easily mess up your openSUSE 10.3, 11.0 or 11.1 system with FACTORY updates. In case of problems the RPM changelog via rpm -q --changelog hplip might provide hints which change cause an issue in particular on older systems (openSUSE 10.3). The version number 3.9.2 is higher than the version of the original packages in openSUSE 10.3, 11.0 or 11.1 so that you may have to remove installed hplip-3.9.2 and hplip-hpijs-3.9.2 packages manually using (as root) rpm -e --nodeps hplip hplip-hpijs before you could re-install the original packages for openSUSE 10.3, 11.0 or 11.1. [opensuse-factory] How to obtain rt2860 detection with the latest kernel:head kernel:2.6.29-56?

Hi, I am using this kernel, and it is quicker than the original 11.1 one, has also volume control working on hotkeys, but no wireless card detection for rt2860. The userspace module does not apply because it has to be detected first. The complaint is that there is no hw-info on the card. Hi, I was wondering if there is any reason why the hplip package in Factory is running that far behind in version ? In Factory we have 2.8.7, while the hp website is already providing version 3.9.2. I will start building the new version in my home repository and if it builds correctly I could perform a submitreq to Factory. Please let me know. [opensuse-factory] OpenOffice-3.0.99.3 x86_64

Today factories OpenOffice was updated to 3.0.99.3. However the *extensions*x86_64.rpms didn't made it into factory ( these packages are available in OpenOffice.org:/UNSTABLE). That causes nasty dependency problems ( one option is to downgrade to i586 because the i586 extensions are not missing).
