[yast-devel] Overcommit - automatic checks via Git hooks

Hi, I found a quite interesting tool called Overcommit [1]. It provides an easy way for setting up Git commit hooks and provides some basic checking plugins. The nice feature of the Git commit hooks is that you can run some checks automatically and early in the development. For example with the commit hooks you can run Rubocop check automatically whenever a commit is created. And if the check fails the commit is not created. I can see "make Rubocop happy" commits quite often (happens to me as well), with Overcommit you can easily avoid that. I have tried several Overcommit checks: - Rubocop - runs Rubocop at "commit" - Rspec - runs the tests before "push" - Branch blacklist - can forbid direct commits to configured branches, e.g. "master" (forces using pull requests, avoids commits to master my mistake) - Commit message spellcheck - warns when there is a possible typo Check my blog post [2] for the details, esp. watch the recorded screencast where I wanted to show some mistakes which it can catch. The tool looks promising, I'll try using it for some time. If you want to try it as well check the blog post for the installation steps. Enjoy! Hi all, some time ago we discussed where and how we should share "Tips&Tricks" for YaST users and developers. IIRC there was no clear conclusion so I decided to start a wiki [1] to collect all our tricks we know or use. For now it's just a place for dumping your ideas, links, short howtos, etc... When we collect enough data we can probably split it to several categories or move it somewhere else. We just need the data first. I have added there some my tricks from my personal "knowledgebase" file. [yast-devel] Highlights for the Leap 15.1 announcement

The time for the release announcement of Leap 15.1 is approaching. I was asked to provide some list of highlights related to YaST. Some obvious things that come to mind are: Look&Feel ========= - The sidebar with the steps of the installation process is back. - New icons everywhere. - Better HiDPI (4k Display) Support Installer improvements ====================== - Choosing the network backend during installation with one click. - Just click "next" to install (open)SUSE in a Raspberry Pi. - Configuration of SSH keys during installation (password-less systems) - Better default partitioning proposal in several scenarios (like small disks, systems with several disks and more). New Functionality ================= - Better management of services. - New UI to manage Firewalld, including AutoYaST support. - Better support for Salt formulas in yast2-configuration-management. - Better management of SSH keys per user. - The Partitioner can now directly format full disks, create software MD RAIDs on top of full disks, create partitions within a software-defined MD RAID and many others combinations. Including AutoYaST support for all those combinations. - Preliminary support for bcache in the Partitioner. I plan to expand those bullet points to be something bigger than a sentence (in the cases in which that makes sense), but first a wondered whether I was overlooking something interesting for the majority of final Leap 15.1 users. Hi, please add the new YaST package yast2-usbauth from https://github.com/kochstefan/yast-usbauth or https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:kochstefan/yast2-usbauth to openSUSE Tumbleweed. This work was initially created for SUSE in 2015. Part of it was the USB interface authorization for the Linux kernel. It's contained in Linux since kernel version 4.4. The packages libusbauth-configparser, usbauth and usbauth-notifier are already part of openSUSE Tumbleweed. packages from the usbauth development: - libusbauth-configparser is a library that is used to parse the usbauth config file. - usbauth is a firewall against BadUSB attacks. It allows/denies USB interfaces using a config file. The needed USB interface authorization is part of Linux 4.4 and newer. - usbauth-notifier is a graphical notifier for user interaction to allow or deny USB devices. - yast2-usbauth: is a YaST module to edit the usbauth configuration file Thank you. [yast-devel] github templates for pull requests and issues

Hi, I just noticed that our documentation team has quite nice pull request templates, that say them important info and also add notices to not forget check few things before you send pull request.[1] I found it quite useful. Maybe it makes sense to have something similar also for yast, as at least me often forget to at least write link to trello. What do you think about it? [yast-devel] GitHub services and webhooks, yast-commit@opensuse.org ?

Hi all, the GitHub Services are deprecated and are replaced by GitHub web hooks. Basically the Services provided an additional logic to process the hooks. For example the email service sends email notifications to the specified address, while the web hooks are just plain HTTP POST requests without any logic (that needs to be implemented on the server side). You can find more details in [1]. This week they disabled the old Services (till January 14, 19:00 UTC) so the users can prepare for the final shut down. Travis and Jenkins ------------------ We use the Services for triggering the Travis and Jenkins builds. The Travis Service has been replaced automatically by a web hook by the Travis server remotely, no action needed, I just removed the old Service configuration from the repositories. For the public Jenkins I have configured an organization web hook. The advantage is that it should cover all YaST Git repositories (even the ones added in the future), no need to configure this for each repository separately. The disadvantage is that it sends the notification also for repositories which do not have any Jenkins job configured. But as the vast majority of the packages use Jenkins and the missing Jenkins jobs are usually for dropped or unmaintained packages which we do not touch anyway then the real overhead should be very minimal. I also removed the old Jenkins Service configuration from GitHub. There is still a fallback to check the repository status once a day at the public Jenkins, so if any web hook is for any reason not delivered (network issue, Jenkins down,...) then still at least once a day the Git repositories are scanned for changes. This means the public Jenkins should work just as expected. Of course, if you see any issues there then just ping me. yast-commit(a)opensuse.org -------------------------- The only problematic GitHub Service is the email Service which for YaST sends notifications to yast-commit(a)opensuse.org. There is no simple replacement, we would need a publicly reachable server which can send emails to yast-commit(a)opensuse.org. But the question is: do we really need that? Does somebody really read the emails from yast-commit(a)opensuse.org? You can see the activity log also at the main https://github.com/ page, or there is a news feed link at the bottom. That can be also an alternative to the commit mails. Would that be enough for you? (Personally I do not read the commit ML, I'm asking here for feedback to see if there is any use for that.) Hi all, We have just published the first "Highlights of YaST Development" report of the year. Just to summarize: * YaST got a security audit and, although no real security problems were found, we were asked to introduce some improvements. * Now it is possible to run the installer through PXE Boot without any local repository. Pretty specific but cool stuff! * We are in the process of revamping SUSE Manager Salt Formulas support in the YaST2 Configuration Management module. Do not be fooled by the name, it is not limited to SUSE Manager. * YaST icons are now included in the package were they are used. We hope it will make things easier for icon designers. * The Firewall module got support for creating firewalld custom zones. * Performance when reading huge /etc/hosts files has been greatly improved. * CD/DVD sources are always disabled after installation.
